Carlos Hernandez has a knack for solar. In 2018, he created his own solar startup, Solergy Systems, with the goal to “Bring Power Where Needed.” His startup offers design, sale, and installation services for rural isolated communities. While doing research into what other solar organizations existed, Carlos came across Twende Solar. From there he participated in the Haiti install and has now been acting as the volunteer Program Director for the last few months. This position includes looking into the technology and management of designing new systems and the upkeep on existing ones. Carlos works on everything from travel logistics, project agreements, evaluation of future projects, and fun activities for volunteers on site. While Carlos has a degree in mechanical engineering and has worked designing industrial machines, installing metro systems, and making maintenance requirements for airplanes, he found a passion for solar. Carlos says that his favorite part of Twende Solar so far has been the Haiti install: every part of it! He notes in particular the technical learning experience, the cultural exchange, the volunteer mini-vacation to the beach, camaraderie among volunteers, and most notably the joyous faces of the local people when power was turned on for the first time. Carlos sees the importance of Twende Solar in what electricity is able to do beyond turn on lights and power outlets; it can improve education, run a clinic, or help aid in the success of a micro business.

Working alongside Carlos to develop projects from origination to closure is Alex Ruvalcaba who acts as Twende Solar’s volunteer Assistant Program Director and Designer. Alex’s background is in mechatronics, renewable energy development, and finance. Alex works as an engineer for a large oil and gas company where he is trying to develop renewable energy projects and new solar system approaches to electrifying remote off-grid facilities. He looks forward to seeing Twende Solar develop more sustaining relationships with communities and partners around the world. In addition, he wants to continue to work on improving Twende Solar’s workflow and performance metrics and remote monitoring alternatives. Alex says he loves everything about Twende Solar, but especially the people who are passionate about making an impact through volunteering. Alex hopes to participate in one of Twende Solar’s upcoming installs and be able to experience the projects that he works so hard to bring to life.
