Empowering Education
with Clean Energy
OVERVIEW - 2016
Global ADE, a non-profit organization, dedicated to strengthening education in developing countries, is currently underway with the construction of its biggest project to date: a brand new middle school! The Stephen Mazujian Middle School will support the families of the Arah Svay village, in addition to nine other surrounding villages, and is projected to impact roughly 1,200 students when all four buildings are complete. This cluster of villages represent some of the poorest villages in Siem Reap, where the student drop-out rate can reach upwards of 60% by middle school. Since its inception, student attendance has risen to 92% in schools operated by Global ADE.
Realizing Global ADE’s proven success in multiple Cambodian schools, and their deep rooted relationship within the community, Twende Solar has chosen to partner with Global ADE and Green Empowerment to bring solar to Siem Reap, electrifying the education of approximately 1,200 students. Implementing solar will offset the costly use of diesel generators, from both a financial and environmental standpoint, and the energy produced will support a new computer lab, additional lights and fans, and refrigeration. With access to modern technology, students will be connected to a wealth of new ideas, inspiring them to pursue opportunities beyond the over saturated traditional labor sector.
Through a collaboration with Global ADE (now part of Spitler School Foundation), Twende Solar developed an educational program tailored to maintaining and ensuring the long term operation of the system, but also specific curriculum for the students to learn about designing and developing systems, in turn spurring STEM career paths and the continuation of renewable energy work in these communities.
