Zach Sippel first came across Twende at the Oregon Solar Energy Conference four years ago. At the time, he was working as a project coordinator for a solar trade ally contractor with a background in writing solar grants and fund initiatives for co-ops, farmers, and non-profits. He felt instantly connected to and interested in Twende’s work, and after a few years of becoming familiar with Twende’s mission, Zach signed up for his first install trip in Peru.

After a remarkable experience in the Mushuk Llamas community, Zach decided to step up to the role as project manager for the recent Haiti install project. Zach helped coordinate many aspects of the install, including reviewing volunteer applications, leading pre-trip volunteer orientations, and completing project write-ups. Zach notes the similar camaraderie and hospitality from community members in Haiti that he experienced in Peru.

Zach has many ideas for the future of Twende, including local installs (similar to the Portland Rescue Mission project), training people new to the solar industry, innovative projects with distinct community benefits, and more.

For Zach, an important aspect of Twende is being an ambassador for solar around the world and sharing knowledge and technology in communities that can benefit from clean and sustainable energy. Zach recognizes the multi-faceted impact of solar; how in addition to providing light and power, there is economic, educational, and social improvement as well. Zach looks forward to his continued involvement with Twende and spreading the word of solar.
